What is a CV

CV is Latin for “course of life.” Or should I say “CV” is an abbreviation for a Latin term “curriculum vitae.”

Typically a CV includes a great deal more of education, training, skills and overall history and is an recommended instrument for those beginning in their industry.

As opposed to a resume which highlights work history and is (supposed to be) short, concise and to the point.

A properly designed CV should tell the reader in a quick glance that you have “this” and “that” and sets you apart from other candidates. But also includes “everything else” there is no rule on how much information or how many pages your CV should or can be. However, a CV includes following a general accepted format that is pretty standard. Without it, you may document key information that will never get looked at or considered and your CV will be placed in the round file cabinet.

The maritime community likes the CV because it’s not just about work history. What you know and what you can do is equally important. And when you get down to brass tax, if you look at each vessel as an employer… all employers practically do the same thing. So it’s important to distinguish your knowledge, education and talents… and the CV does that.
